Outline for Presenters on Student Behavior

New Full-Time Directors Staff Training Fall Semester

Possible presenters – Kelly, Rick, Joe, Dwayne, Shawna

Overall Objective:

To provide new Full-Time staff with the necessary information to both manage ASU’s in-hall student conduct process and work with Judicial Affairs on more serious incidents.

Learning Outcomes:

–          Participants will be introduced to student conduct philosophies of both the Department of Resident Life (DRL) and the Department of Student Life(DSL)

–          Participants will learn the fundamentals of the DRL conduct process, including

o   Using the staff web to track and manage incidents

o   Typical incidents and relevant Spartan Life policies

o   How to refer incidents to other staff members (Directors, AHDs, etc) and what types of incidents can or should be referred

o   Meeting fundamentals (tips on scheduling, having developmental conversations, etc)

o   Educational sanctioning

–          Participants will learn the fundamental of how to effectively work with DSL to refer and manage higher level judicial cases, including

o   Referral process (necessary documentation, citing policies, witnesses, etc)

o   The role of Student Life in the conduct process (administrative meetings, hearings, judicial boards, outcomes)

o   *The role of Residence Life staff in the hearing process

–          Participants will receive a quick introduction to Restorative Justice and its role at ASU*

*The suggestion for this topic would be to provide an initial overview of what happens and what staff should do to prepare and then hold a more comprehensive session early in the semester, perhaps staging a mock hearing.

** A more comprehensive Restorative Justice training session should be offered in the Fall.

 

All Full Time Directors

Possible Presenters– Rick, Paul, interested central staff members

Overall Objective:

To review ASU’s housing contract termination process; to provide Directors with any relevant updates pertaining to student conduct in the residence halls; to offer data on behavior trends over the past year and give directors an opportunity to discuss best practices for dealing with particular types of incidents, sanctioning, etc.

Learning Outcomes:

–          Participants should be able to explain the necessary steps to conduct the contract termination process.

–          Participants should gain a working knowledge of any new changes to the conduct process (through DRL and DSL).

–          Participants should be able to use the information received on yearly behavior trends to plan for the coming year.

–          Participants will learn new tips for handling typical conduct situations, creating educational sanctions, and having more developmental behavioral conversations from their colleagues.

 

 New Assistant Hall Directors

Possible Presenters– Chris Scadelon, Renee, Ed, Joe

Overall Objective:

To provide new Assistant Hall Directors with the necessary skills and information to work with MSU’s in-hall student conduct process.

Learning Outcomes:

–          Participants will be introduced to student conduct philosophies of both the Department of Resident Life (DRL) and the Department of Student Life(DSL) (to include a brief mention of restorative justice)

–          Participants will learn the fundamentals of the DRL conduct process, including

o   Using the staff web to track and manage incidents

o   Typical incidents and relevant Spartan Life policies

o   Meeting fundamentals (tips on scheduling, having developmental conversations, etc)

o   Educational sanctioning

–          Participants will come away with a better understanding of and tips on how to work with staff to confront inappropriate behavior.

–          Participants will receive a  basic understanding of how DRL works with Student Life on higher level conduct cases  (contact methods, administrative meetings, sanctions, hearing options, etc) so they can explain this process to students they meet with.
